Luca

Every so often a name comes along that seems to have been designed for maximum ease, and lately that name is Luca. Two syllables, all vowels and open air, it slips off the tongue like the first sip of an espresso in the sun.

Its roots are properly Italian, and its meaning is charmingly literal: man from Lucania, the old region down in the south of Italy. So it's a place before it's a person, a name that carries a whiff of somewhere warm and golden and a little bit ancient, without ever making you learn a history lesson to enjoy it. You just say it and feel the sunshine.

And say it the world certainly does. Luca is having a genuine moment: it's number 6 in both Australia and New Zealand, 7 in England and Wales, and 16 in Catalonia. It carries on at 21 in Canada, 57 in Mexico City, 60 in Argentina and 67 in the United States. That is a name comfortably at home in the southern hemisphere, across Europe and right through the Americas, very few names travel this lightly or this far.

Part of its magic is how many lives it has already fitted. There's Luca Pacioli, the Italian father of accounting, which lends the name an unexpectedly tidy, ledger-balancing gravitas. There's the painter Luca Signorelli, all Renaissance grandeur, and the footballer Luca Toni, all thunderous centre-forward swagger. And because no Italian name is complete without a little menace, fiction handed us Luca Brasi from The Godfather. Bookkeeper, painter, striker, enforcer, that's remarkable range for four letters.

On a shortlist it is almost suspiciously agreeable. Pair it with Matteo and Leo for a boldly Italian sibling set, or let it sit softly beside Sofia and Mia, and everything simply harmonises. It needs no nickname, since it already sounds like one, and it never feels heavy on a small child or awkward on a grown one. That kind of effortlessness is precisely why it keeps climbing, year after year, on lists all over the world. Parents seem to reach for it and then wonder why they ever considered anything else.

Of course, effortless on the page and easy to decide upon are two very different things. That is the exquisite frustration of naming a baby: Luca can sound like a Tuscan holiday, chart on three continents and pair with anything you throw at it, and still you'll find yourself murmuring it to the ceiling at 3am, testing whether it truly belongs to the little one on the way. It makes as strong a case as any name could, but the final verdict, as always, waits on someone yet to make their entrance.
