Liam

Every so often a name stops being fashionable and simply becomes the default. Liam has done exactly that, and it happened faster than almost anyone predicted.

The numbers are frankly astonishing. Liam is number one in the United States as of 2020 and number one in Mexico City as of 2023. It is number two in Canada, number eight in Argentina, and number 13 in both France and Catalonia. Australia has it at 22 and New Zealand at 23. Two outright chart-toppers, a runner-up and top-25 placings across three more continents: very few names in the world can claim a spread like that, and fewer still can claim it while remaining only four letters long.

The origin is Irish, and the meaning has real backbone: resolute protector. That is not a decorative meaning. It is a job description. There is something rather comforting about handing a tiny, entirely defenceless person a name that means the opposite, as though you are stating your intentions for him rather than describing the current situation.

Why has it swept the board? Partly because it does something clever with sound. Liam is soft at the front and firm at the back, gentle without being wispy, strong without being blunt. It is also the rare short name that has never been a nickname for anything else in most people's minds; it stands on its own. And crucially, it works in English, Spanish, French and Catalan without a single adjustment, which is exactly why it has taken hold on both sides of the Atlantic at the same time.

Liam Payne, the English singer and songwriter, lived from 1993 to 2024. Liam Hemsworth, the Australian actor, was born in 1990. Liam Cunningham is an Irish actor, and Liam Lawson is a New Zealand motor racing driver. Music, film, television, motorsport: it is a name that has turned up everywhere in modern popular culture, which is both a cause and a consequence of that global climb.

Now for the honest bit, because a name this popular deserves a warning label. At number one, your Liam will not be the only Liam. There will be two in the class, three at the party, and a lifetime of surname initials on the register. Some parents find that thought unbearable. Others point out, quite reasonably, that no child in history has ever resented a name for being well liked, and that the alternative is explaining an unusual spelling to every receptionist he ever meets.

Its shortlist companions tell the same story. Noah, Emma, Olivia and Mason are all names that went global at roughly the same moment, all short, warm and instantly readable in a dozen countries.

So Liam is a safe bet in the best sense: strong meaning, easy sound, no maintenance required. Whether safe is what you want, at three in the morning, with a notebook full of crossings-out, is the eternal question.
