Emily is one of those names that seems all soft edges until you stop and read the small print. It comes from Latin, and its meaning has a surprising bit of steel tucked into it: "rival", or "industrious". So beneath that gentle, familiar sound is a name that either quietly wants to win or, at the very least, is fully prepared to roll up its sleeves and put in a proper shift.
